Gymnocalycium mesopotamicum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species refers to its range, the Argentine landscape of Mesopotamia .

description

The single, pressed-spherical Gymnocalycium mesopotamicum is dark green and reaches heights of growth of 1.2 to 2.3 centimeters and a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. The 7 to 9, broad, low and blunt ribs have transverse furrows. The 9 to 12 flexible, needle-like thorns flattened towards the surface of the plant body are reddish-brown and between 2 and 9 millimeters long. They turn grayish white with age.

The pure white flowers are 6 to 7 centimeters long and up to 6.5 centimeters in diameter. The dull green fruits are club-shaped, 2 to 3 centimeters long and have a diameter between 7 and 8 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium mesopotamicum is distributed in the Argentine province of Corrientes at altitudes of about 200 meters.

It was first described in 1980 by the botanist Roberto Kiesling (* 1941).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
