Gymnocalycium paediophilum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species means child-loving and refers to the numerous educated children .
description
The sprouting and group-forming Gymnocalycium paediophilum has round to short cylindrical, green shoots that reach a height of 10 to 20 centimeters with a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeters. The 6 to 10 ribs are somewhat warty. The strong central spine is 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long. Sometimes there are two additional smaller ones. The awl, 5 to 7 radial spines are erect, brown and up to 3 inches long.
The pale red, wide-opening flowers are 4.5 to 6 inches long and 5 to 6 inches in diameter. The green to blue-green fruits are 1 to 1.8 centimeters long and 0.7 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter.
Distribution and systematics
Gymnocalycium paediophilum is widespread in Paraguay in the Boquerón department .
The first description was published in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter .
