Gymnocalycium papschii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Austrian cactus lover Wolfgang Papsch (* 1946).

description

Gymnocalycium papschii grows individually with medium green, spherical, elongated spherical or short columnar shoots and reaches heights of 4 to 9.5 centimeters with diameters of 3 to 6.5 centimeters. The twelve to 14 (rarely up to 17) ribs are knuckled like a chin. The initially white to light yellow thorns later turn light gray to light brown. They usually have a darker base. The mostly single, curved and twisted central spine is up to 5 millimeters long. Of the ten radial spines, the top two are up to 4 millimeters long and the middle up to 7 millimeters. The rest are shorter again.

The funnel-shaped, ivory-white to light pink flowers reach a length of 4.5 to 6 centimeters and a diameter of 4.5 to 5 centimeters. The shiny olive-green fruits are elongated. They reach a length of 1.8 to 2.2 centimeters and a diameter of 6 to 9 millimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Gymnocalycium papschii is distributed in the Argentine province of Córdoba in the Sierra de los Comechingones between grasses at an altitude of 1200 meters.

The first description was in 2001 by Hans Till .
