Gymnocalycium pugionacanthum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Gymnocalycium pugionacanthum grows individually with dull, deep blue-green, hemispherical to spherical shoots and reaches heights of up to 8.7 centimeters with a diameter of 11 centimeters. The twelve to 15 wide ribs are divided into humps by shallow transverse furrows. The seven to nine (rarely up to 11) strong, curved, rigid, black thorns turn gray with a black tip with age. One of them is pointing downwards. They are 1.5 to 2.8 centimeters (rarely up to 3.5 centimeters) long.

The slender, funnel-shaped, creamy white to light pink flowers have a reddish throat. They reach a length of 5.5 to 6 centimeters (rarely up to 8 centimeters) and have a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. The blue-green to gray-green, glaucoma fruits are spindle-shaped. They reach a diameter of up to 1.3 centimeters and are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium pugionacanthum is widespread in the Argentine province of La Rioja at altitudes of 1000 to 1900 meters.

The first description was in 1987 by Hans Till .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
