Gymnocalycium riojense is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Gymnocalycium riojense grows individually with dull green to brownish green, flattened spherical shoots and reaches heights of 1 to 8 centimeters with diameters of 8 to 10 centimeters (rarely up to 20 centimeters). The ten to 13 (rarely up to 28) straight ribs are barely humped. There is never a central spine . The three to seven light brown radial spines have a darker tip and lie on the surface of the shoot. One of them is directed downwards, the rest sideways. They are 0.9 to 1.5 inches long.
The short tubular to funnel-shaped, whitish to slightly pale pink flowers have a dark throat. They reach a length of up to 4.8 centimeters and a diameter of 4 centimeters. The barrel-shaped to egg-shaped fruits are brown-green to olive-green and slightly glaucous . They are about 2.6 inches long and 1.3 to 1.8 inches in diameter.
Distribution and systematics
Gymnocalycium riojense is widespread in the Argentine provinces of Catamarca and La Rioja at altitudes of 450 to 1500 meters.
The first description was in 1991 by Hans and Walter Till . The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Gymnocalycium riojense subsp. riojense
- Gymnocalycium riojense subsp. kozelskyanum Schütz ex H.Till & W.Till
- Gymnocalycium riojense subsp. paucispinum Backeb. ex H.Till & W.Till
- Gymnocalycium riojense subsp. piltziorum Schütz ex H.Till & W.Till
