Gyula Major

Jakab Gyula Major (born as James Julius Mayer December 13, 1859 in Kassa , Austrian Empire ; died January 30, 1925 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian pianist, music teacher and composer.

Life

James Julius Mayer's name has been Magyarized . Major studied at the Budapest Music Academy with Robert Volkmann and Ferenc Erkel . From 1889 to 1895 he was employed as a teacher at the music academy. From 1894 he directed the women's choir Magyar Női Karénekegyesületet for a decade . In 1896 he founded his own music school.

Major composed five symphonies, a piano concerto, chamber music, choral music and songs. Among the compositions are the operas Erzsike (1901), Széchy Mária , which was performed in Kolozsvár in 1906 , and Mila , which was performed in Pozsony in 1913 . He wrote two textbooks.

The Hungarian musicologist Ervin Major was his son.
