history
The Hôtel-Dieu was founded by the king in the Middle Ages . It was used to look after the pilgrims to St. James , to look after the elderly and the sick and as an orphanage . In the 18th century it was rebuilt on the site of a previous building. This was made possible by the support of wealthy citizens of the city. In the 19th century, the Hôtel-Dieu was converted into a pure hospital, which was only closed after the new building on the outskirts in 1970. Today it is used as a nursing home for the elderly.
architecture
The three-wing system around an inner courtyard is closed on the fourth side by a magnificent portal . The left wing was only built in 1853. In the right wing is the Saint-Jean l'Évangeliste chapel , which was renovated in the 19th century.
