The cave filefish ( Pervagor janthinosoma ) lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to Samoa , north to southern Japan and south to New South Wales and Tonga .

features

It becomes 13 to 14 centimeters long, the head and front body are bluish, the trunk green and the caudal fin orange-red. The gill opening is black. The first ray of the dorsal fin stands alone and is strongly developed. The rest of the soft-radiating dorsal fin, the anal fin and the pectoral fins are transparent. Males have a Velcro-like zone of glandular skin appendages on the base of their tail.

Way of life

Cave filefish live very hidden in lagoons , rocky and outer reefs at depths of one to 20 meters. They prefer areas rich in corals and stay mainly in rock caves, under sponges and large coral stocks. Adult specimens form pairs, but usually only one is visible foraging for food while the partner hides.
