Hörður Áskelsson

Hörður Áskelsson (born July 19, 1953 in Akureyri ) is an Icelandic organist and choirmaster.

Hörður Áskelsson studied music in Akureyri and Reykjavík. From 1976 to 1981 he studied at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf, with Hans-Dieter Möller , Almut Rössler and Hartmut Schmidt , among others . In 1981 he passed his A-exam with distinction. Before he returned to Iceland, he served as organist at the Neanderkirche in Düsseldorf for a year . Since 1982 he has been organist and cantor of Hallgrímskirkja . In 1987 he founded a festival for sacred music. In 1996 the Schola Cantorum Reykjavicensis Chamber Choir was founded . With his choirs he won prizes in Cork (1996), Noyon (1998) and Gorizia (2002). His interpretations were documented through recordings on radio and television.

Hörður Áskelsson teaches organ and choral conducting at the National School of Church Music in Iceland. He also teaches at the University of Iceland's Faculty of Theology . In 2002 he was awarded the Icelandic Music Prize. In 2004 he received the Knight's Cross of the Icelandic Order of Falcons.
