The Hörder Bridge , also known as the Hörder Bahnhofsbrücke , is a pedestrian bridge in the Hörde district of Dortmund .

location

The bridge runs between the Dortmund-Hörde train station and the district administration over the railway tracks ( Dortmund – Soest and Dortmund – Schwerte ) and Hörder Bahnhofstrasse. It connects the pedestrian zone of downtown Hörder north of the tracks with the districts in the south via Hörder Brückenstraße.

history

The first Hörder Bridge was built in 1903 because the volume of traffic at the level crossing in the district was too high and the barriers on the busy railway line blocked traffic up to 167 times a day. The Dortmund steel construction company August Klönne was awarded the contract to build an iron truss bridge. The 75.6 meter long and 12 meter wide bridge cost 140,000 gold marks and weighed 450 tons. It was inaugurated on October 17, 1903.

The structure was approved for all road traffic including trams. In 1959 a fire engine had an accident on the bridge near black ice so badly that the bridge was classified as “no longer load-bearing”. To the east of the old bridge, a modern concrete bridge was built in the early 1960s, and the old steel bridge was then dismantled in 1964/65. At the end of the 1960s, the decision was made to expand downtown Hörder into a pedestrian zone. Motor vehicle traffic was reduced and finally banned from the bridge completely, with rail traffic following in the 1980s.

In 1987 the bridge was in the media nationwide. The building was to be renovated and embellished with concrete flower pots. However, the work had to be canceled because the load-bearing capacity of the bridge was not designed for the heavy concrete elements. At this point in time, the material and work had already cost 210,000 DM.

The quarter around the bridge has been redesigned since 2011. The old station was demolished and a new station with a shopping center and parking decks was built on the site. A bunker on the corner of Seekante and Faßstrasse was also demolished, and the nearby Phoenix Gymnasium received a sports hall and a new schoolyard.

The bridge and its surroundings were renovated and redesigned at the end of 2013 for 250,000 euros. The competition was won by wbp landscape architects , the executing company was Benning from Münster in Westphalia . Concrete elements disappeared and were replaced by new terracing, a colored plaster was used in the transition from the bridge to the market square. Bridge balconies, new stairs, elevators and an iron walkway to the train station were built. Grooved panels were used for the visually impaired. On the bridge, new seating furniture, bike racks, waste bins and new lanterns should convey a modern ambience.

architecture

The girder bridge was originally built for all types of traffic, but is now only used as a pedestrian bridge. The bridge has a central pillar between the tracks on a platform and another in the north between the tracks and Hörder Bahnhofstrasse.
