The Hülsenbecker valley in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Ennepetal is traversed by the Hülsenbecke stream, which gives it its name . In terms of nature, it is part of the Ennepetal gorges within the Hagen marginal heights of the Rhenish Slate Mountains . In the lower third, the valley area was designed as a landscape park and is therefore a popular local recreation area in the city of Ennepetal.

Running water system

The Hülsenbecke is a stream flowing into the Ennepe , which has its source in the hamlet of Rüggeberg . It feeds the ponds and the hydropower park. At the entrance of the valley there are two old half-timbered houses, a riding stables and a café. In the lower valley area in the area of today's park there were two water engines in the 18th century, including a grinding bowl .

The valley forms a local recreation area, which is traversed by several marked hiking trails and Nordic walking trails - the longest is around 8 km. In the lower third there is an extensive zoo, a pond landscape for observing aquatic animals, a hydropower park with two water paddle wheels including educational boards for historical use, an open-air arena with music shell and two children's play areas, one of which is directly on the stream. Free access is possible all year round.

The zoo is an essential element of the park and has the character of bringing the local as well as exotic animal world closer to the visitors and especially the youngsters in a variety of ways. In addition to the general learning effect, it is suitable for bringing joy to children and adults, because many of the animals are communicative and encourage them to deal with them.

some residents of the enclosure

In addition to the cage enclosures, there are several large outdoor enclosures with residents starting with red deer (roe deer, fawns and stags), hoofed game such as donkeys, goats and other animals, as well as a lot of poultry, on the ponds and in the enclosures.

Animal-friendly feed is offered via vending machines, and when purchased, this benefits the animals as well as the financing of the park.

Redesign of the park in 2016

According to a council resolution of the city of Ennepetal from December 2015, an intervention in the dam system of the ponds in the Hülsenbeck valley was necessary for water protection reasons. In the course of this work, the local recreation area was to be upgraded and landscaping measures were to increase the attractiveness of the park.

Work began at the beginning of 2016. The Hülsenbeck was diverted and a pipe was laid to secure the feed to the runway waterworks. After the upper pond had been emptied, the sediments and sludge that had accumulated over the years were removed and the dam was removed.

Summer 2018 - natural remodeling

After the competition to redesign the park was over, the city administration published the documentation “Redesign of the Hülsenbeckertal in Ennepetal” in January.

Since the beginning of the change work in 2016, nature has visibly recovered. The animal enclosures have been prepared and informative signage has been put up.

The area of the former upper pond is blooming again, the running water system is still preserved, as is an older water feature.

2020 - The COVID-19 pandemic also affects the Hülsenbeck valley

A promised and planned redesign of the amusement park has not yet taken place as of May 2020.

After there was very little audience in the park in April, more visitors are now coming again, but the legal restrictions with regard to Corona reduce the recreational value in a certain sense.

Significant restrictions are the effects of the legal distance requirement. At the children's playground, signs point out the distance rules, which is certainly a challenge for parents, but the required distance is also indicated on the park paths.

This condition will certainly go down in the history of the park.

The current and likely persistent drought is causing the upper pond level to drop sharply. Starting the redesign would certainly bring improvements here.
