The Ennepetal gorges are a natural spatial unit with the order number 336 1 .10 within the Hagen border heights (336 1 .1) and, according to the handbook of the natural classification of Germany, comprise the mostly forested valleys deeply cut into the Breckerfeld plateau (336 1 .0) the middle Ennepe and Heilenbecke between Ennepetal - Milspe and the Ennepetalsperre or the Heilenbecker dam .
The rivers have dug themselves steeply and deeply into the slate and sandstone of the Brandenberg strata of the Eifelium . The lively slope of the water-rich Ennepe and Heilenbecke favored the settlement of numerous proto-industrial water mills and hammer mills .
A special feature in the natural area is the Klutert cave in the lower slope of the Klutertberg near Milspe, which was created by leaching in the limestone deposits of a residual deposit from the upper Honsel layers .
