A smelter is a (coal) mine with an attached coking plant , smelting of iron ore and, in some cases, further processing of the iron products into steel and rolled steel products .

One of the first integrated smelter mines of this type in Germany was the Oberhausen colliery , which belonged to the Gutehoffnungshütte group and started mining in 1857. Another example was the Duisburg- based union of German emperors , which was part of the Thyssen group for most of its existence .
