H. Pierre Noyes

Henry Pierre Noyes (born December 10, 1923 in Paris , † September 30, 2016 in Stanford ) was an American theoretical physicist.

Noyes was the son of William Albert Noyes junior . He studied at Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1943 and the University of California, Berkeley , where he received his doctorate in physics in 1950 and then was at the Radiation Laboratory. In 1943/44 he was at the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Birmingham in 1950/51 and from 1951 Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester . In 1955 he became group leader at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under the direction of Edward Teller . From 1962 he was at SLAC , where he initially headed the Theoretical Physics department as an Associate Professor (until he was replaced by Sidney Drell ), and where he was Professor of Theoretical Physics from 1967 to 2002.

Among other things, he dealt with nucleon-nucleon scattering (partly with Michael J. Moravcsik ) and the nuclear physics problem of few particles.

From 1959 to 1962 he was a consultant to General Dynamics (General Atomics Division), where he worked with Freeman Dyson and Ted Taylor on Project Orion (nuclear-powered spacecraft), and from Lockheed Aircraft in 1962/63. 1957/58 he was Leverhulme Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and 1961 visiting professor at Cornell University .

He later represented an attempt to derive fundamental natural constants from discrete bit-string models, called bit-string physics. (Other representatives were Ted Bastin and Clive W. Kilmister and John Amson and a forerunner Arthur Eddington and the British mystic and mycologist Frederick Parker-Rhodes (1914-1987)). They grouped themselves in the Alternative Natural Philosophy Association in Cambridge, of which Noyes was temporarily president.

In 1979 he received the Humboldt Research Award . He was a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
