The H. von Gimborn GmbH is a German manufacturer and a sales network for pet products for cats , dogs and rodents . The products are sold worldwide under the brands GimCat (formerly GimPet), GimDog and Biokat’s in pet shops, food retailers and online shops.

Company history

The company was founded in 1855 by the pharmacist and namesake Heinrich von Gimborn as a chemical-pharmaceutical factory. In the beginning, the main focus was on the production of pastes and tablets for the human sector - analogous to today's products from the animal sector. With the aforementioned products, as well as ink, liquorice and fennel honey , the company established itself in the market and recorded rapid growth. Until the end of the 19th century, H. von Gimborn had branches all over Germany and abroad. Gimborn was represented in South America, China and the USA, among others. From 1909 the company was a stock corporation .

In 1929 the company was sold to the Pelikan company and from then on supported its new owner with the production of ink and carbon paper . When the city of Emmerich was destroyed in the Second World War , H. von Gimborn AG was not spared either; the company was only able to be rebuilt in 1950.

With the acquisition of the license for the British brand Ipevet in 1965, H. von Gimborn GmbH took its first steps in the pet market. In the 1980s the company was sold by Pelikan AG to Michael Eckes (from the owner family of the beverage manufacturer Eckes ).

In 1997 Süd-Chemie AG in Munich took over the company. In 1999 H. von Gimborn GmbH expanded by purchasing the Italian Giglioli Group and from then on had branches in Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia. From 2000, Gimborn also ran pet shops in the Czech Republic.

In 2006 there was another sale of Gimborn for € 16.6 million (before deduction of financial liabilities € 28 million) to the Berlin Gimborn Holding GmbH, with the Berlin financial investor capiton AG taking an 86% stake in a management buy-out . From September 2008 the Gimborn Group was wholly owned by the Prague private equity fund Penta Investments . The turnover this year reached around 72 million euros.

In 2011 the sale of the company was discussed again. In this context, the now more than 160 Pet Center specialist pet shops in the Czech Republic were sold. The contemplated sale of Gimborn to the Perusa investment fund ultimately did not materialize.

Today Gimborn has around 180 employees across Europe. Production facilities are located in Emmerich am Rhein and in Kelheim . Another location of the company is in Italy.

Gimborn was the first manufacturer to have lactose-reduced milk in its range. The milk for rearing kittens is also considered innovative, as it comes very close to cat milk. In 1995 Gimborn was the first company to offer dog products with L-carnitine, which among other things reduces the build-up of fat in tissue and stimulates the energy metabolism.

Gimborn received various innovation awards for its products as "Novelty of the Year" from the pet trade magazine pet, which asked dealers in German-speaking countries. For example in 2014 for the Biokat's Diamond Care cat litter and in 2016 for the GimCat Duo-Pastes and the GimDog Little Darling snacks range, which was specially developed for the physical needs of small dogs up to 10 kg. Gimborn was the first company ever to receive this award simultaneously in the dog and cat categories in the same year.

In 2016 H. von Gimborn GmbH was taken over by the Hillhouse Capital Group. In 2015, Gimborn was the first German company to offer snacks such as snacks with official approval from the authorities. B. functional pastes for cats, was allowed to import to China. With the new owner, Gimborn now wants to expand its presence in the Asian markets.
