HC Kärnten (since 2015 Schlafraum.at Kärnten) is a handball club from the state capital Klagenfurt .

history

The beginnings

The club was founded in 1959 as an ice hockey club, but from 1963 shifted the focus to handball . In 1965 ice hockey was finally stopped. At that time the Carinthians were already playing field handball on the asphalted HCK pitch.

First successes in the State League A.

After participating in the state league in the 1970s , the Klagenfurters managed to move up to the state league B at the end of the decade. HCK - Semmelrock was able to secure the championship title in 1983 and was promoted to the top division in Austria. In the 1984/85 season, the best placement in the club's history was achieved with fifth place. In addition, the U21 team won the Austrian championship title for the first time in the same year.

At the beginning of the 1990s , the team rose to the second division as part of the Casino-PSK-Kärnten gaming community . 1992 succeeded under Lino Cervar the renewed promotion to the State League A. In addition, this successful year crowned the triumph in the Austrian U19 championship. Despite the dissolution of the casino-PSK-Kärnten syndicate, the HCK was able to hold its own in the midfield of the first Austrian division. The team secured sixth place twice (1994/95, 1997/98) and fourth place once (1996/97). At the end of the 1990s, the rise of SVVW Klagenfurt resulted in derbies in the state capital for the first time in the club's history . In 1999 the HCK was relegated to the Handball Bundesliga Austria , as a future goal of renewed promotion through increased youth work was defined.

Club history since 2008

Since 2008 you could twice reach the upper play-off necessary for promotion to the handball league Austria but failed there both times due to the competition. While the Carinthians were just able to qualify via fourth place on their first attempt in the 2009/10 season, they even ended the basic round in first place in the table in 2012. In the 2012/13 season they only reached the penultimate place in the main round with five wins, but were able to secure relegation via second place in the lower play-off. In the following season , the state capital city ran for the first time without the former main sponsor Kelag and again only reached ninth place. As a result, the relegation had to be fought for this year as well. After you finished last in the lower play-off, you played a duel against the penultimate in the best-of-three mode for relegation. The opponent in this duel was the second team of the handball club Fivers Margareten , which the Klagenfurt team defeated in two games. After relegation in 2013/2014, Hc Kärnten entered into a syndicate with SVVW Klagenfurt in order to get promoted back to the Bundesliga. After the immediate resurgence, the club plays in the handball Bundesliga again under the name Schlafraum.at Kärnten. In the 2015/2016 season the upper play-off could be reached immediately and so Schlafraum.at Carinthia is playing for promotion to the HLA. In the 2016/17 season, the club's goals could not be achieved and they played in the lower playoff against relegation. In the 2017/18 season they played in the top playoff again.
