SACOI
The HVDC Italy-Corsica-Sardinia ( HVDC connection Sa rdinien- Co rsika- I taly) is one of the oldest high-voltage DC transmission Plant in the world and one of the few that not a pure two-point connection, because it is used to connect the power grids of Sardinia and Corsica to that of Italy and thus of continental Europe .
history
The SACOI went into operation in 1965 as a monopolar connection with mercury vapor rectifiers as valves and consists of five sections:
- Overhead line section of 50 km in length on the Italian mainland
- 103 km of submarine cable between Italy and Corsica
- Overhead line section of 167 km in Corsica
- Submarine cable section of 15 km between Corsica and Sardinia
- Overhead line section of 87 km in Sardinia
The transmission capacity was originally 200 MW at a voltage of 200 kV. The converter stations are located on the Italian mainland in Suvereto at 43 ° 3 ′ 10 ″ N , 10 ° 41 ′ 42 ″ E , on Corsica in Lucciana at 42 ° 31 ′ 40 ″ N , 9 ° 26 ′ 59 ″ E , in Sardinia at Codrongianos at 40 ° 39 '7 " N , 8 ° 42' 48" O .
In the 1970s / 1980s, the SACOI was often out of service for a long time, as the overhead line section on Corsica was often the target of terrorist attacks.
In 1992 a second pole with a transmission capacity of 300 MW at a voltage of 200 kV was put into operation. At the same time, the mercury vapor rectifiers of the first pole were also replaced by thyristors . In the course of this measure, the converter station on the Italian mainland was relocated from San Dalmazio to Suvereto.
