The HMS Discovery was a ship of the Royal Navy , which became known by the Arctic Expedition 1875-1876 under George Nares .

The Discovery was built at the Stephens & Sons shipyard in Dundee , Scotland and launched in 1873. It had 3 masts and was equipped with a 365 hp steam engine. Originally named Bloodhound and intended to be used as a whaler , the ship was bought by the British Admiralty in 1874. She was one of two ships ( Discovery : Captain Henry F. Stephenson; HMS Alert : Captain Albert Hastings Markham), which should bring a British Arctic expedition to the North Pole under the direction of Captain George Nares (1831-1915) . Started on May 29, 1875 in Portsmouth , the route of the two ships led past the west coast of Greenland to northeast of Ellesmere Island , where the Discovery wintered in Lady Franklin Bay at 81 ° 44 'N. Captain Markham succeeded in the spring of 1876 in sledging to 83 ° 20 'north latitude. Since cases of scurvy occurred, the expedition had to be canceled. Although it had not reached the North Pole, it returned with valuable scientific and geographical knowledge at the end of October 1876.

About the further use of the ship is z. Nothing known at the moment. In 1902 the ship was sold.
