Until mid-1841, HMS Hydra was used in the Mediterranean; Among other things, she was involved in the conquest of Acre on November 4, 1840. She then operated in the Caribbean and off the American coast, where she intercepted slave ships . From 1853 she fought the slave trade off the African coast.
In 1863 the ship was converted into a research ship and was first used in the Mediterranean and from September 1867 onwards to measure the depth of the sea in the Arabian Sea between Aden and Bombay .
