Admiral Cowan (ex- HMS Sandown ) is a minehunter of the Estonian Navy . It is the lead ship of the Royal Navy's Sandown class . The Admiral Cowan is the first of three boats of this class that the Estonian naval forces acquired from the Royal Navy in 2006.
history
The Sandown was built as the first of the five boats in the first batch of the ship class of the same name in the VT Group shipyard in the United Kingdom . The boat was launched on April 16, 1988 and entered service by the Royal Navy on June 9, 1989. Against the background of the changed situation at the beginning of the 21st century, the Sandown and two sister ships, Bridport and Inverness , were decommissioned and sold to the Estonian Navy.
There the boats were reactivated and incorporated into the mine defense division ( Miinilaevade Divisjon ). It got its new name after Admiral Sir Walter Henry Cowan , who led the British naval forces in the Baltic Sea to intervene in the Russian Civil War to provide naval support to Estonia during the Estonian War of Freedom . Since the decommissioning of the Admiral Pitka in 2013, the Admiral Cowan has been the flagship of the Estonian naval forces.
