HMS terror

Nine ships of the British Royal Navy were named Terror or HMS Terror :

  • The first Terror was launched in 1696 and was a bombarde equipped with 4 cannons . It was captured and burned by France in 1704.
  • The second terror was a 14-gun bombardment launched in 1741 and sold in 1754.
  • The third Terror was a bombarde launched in 1759 with 8 cannons. It was sold in 1774.
  • The fourth HMS Terror was launched in 1779. The bombard was equipped with 8 cannons and was sold in 1812.
  • The fifth HMS Terror was a gunboat with 4 guns that was purchased from the Netherlands in 1794. In 1804 the ship was sold again.
  • The sixth HMS Terror was a 10-gun bombarde launched in 1813. Together with the HMS Erebus , she took part in the Antarctic expedition under James Clark Ross from 1839 to 1843 and in the Arctic expedition under John Franklin from 1845 . Both ships had to be abandoned in the pack ice at King William Island in 1848 .
  • The seventh HMS Terror was a 16-gun floating battery launched in 1856. She served as a station ship in Bermuda and was sold in 1902.
  • The eighth HMS Terror was launched in 1866 under the name HMS Malabar . In 1901 the name was changed to Terror . The ship was sold in 1918.
  • The ninth HMS Terror was a monitor of the Erebus class and ran 1916 from the pile. The ship sank in 1941 after an air raid.

From 1945 to 1971 the barracks of the Singapore Naval Base in Sembawang , Singapore , also bore the name HMS Terror .
