history

In the 1940s, Howard Hughes founded a research facility in Culver City , California; in 1960 this moved to Malibu , California. In 1984 a US federal court ruled that the Howard Hughes Medical Institute had to sell its shares in Hughes Aircraft and its subsidiaries in order to maintain its status as a non-profit organization . General Motors bought Hughes Aircraft in 1985. GM sold the aerospace and defense division to Raytheon in 1997 , and spun off Hughes Research Laboratories (now renamed "HRL Laboratories, LLC") as a separate company. Joint owners became GM and Raytheon. In 2000, GM sold satellite production to Boeing , and since then Boeing, GM and Raytheon have jointly owned HRL Laboratories. In 2007 Raytheon sold its shares, although research and development agreements with HRL are still in place. HRL Laboratories are financed by their owners, through contracts with the US Department of Defense and other customers.

HRL focuses on advanced developments in microelectronics , information & systems sciences, materials, sensors and photonics , your field of work ranges from basic research to product delivery. Work is being carried out on integrated circuits , high-performance lasers , antennas, networks and intelligent materials , among other things .

Despite downsizing during the shrinking aerospace industry in the 1990s, HRL remains Malibu's largest employer.
