Habib Mangal

Habib Mangal (* 1946 in Star, Chot, Qalandar District , Chost Province ) is an Afghan politician. He ran for the 2009 presidential election in Afghanistan.

Life

Mangal is a trained doctor who also has a doctorate in social sciences . According to a profile from the Pajhwok Afghan News news agency , he attended Rahman Baba Secondary School and received his medical training from Kabul Medical University. It is not known where he obtained his doctorate in social sciences. In 1977 and 1978 he worked as a doctor at Khost Hospital. He then went on to be in charge of health affairs in Samangan Province.

He joined the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) in 1964 when he was 18 years old. According to Pajhwok Afghan News , he worked as an activist for the party from 1964 to 1981. He helped found the student movement at Kabul University in 1972 and 1973. He was imprisoned for his activities in the student movement. According to Pajhwok Afghan News , there was a second imprisonment for "political reasons" and for "intra-party differences" from 1977 to 1978.

In 1979 he became a member of the Central Committee of the PDPA. From 1980 to 1986 Mangal held a senior diplomatic post. In 1986 he took part in a constitutional loja jirga as representative of the Paktia province . From 1987 to 1991 he represented the Paktia in the Wolesi Jirga , the upper house of the Afghan parliament. When the PDPA administration in Afghanistan fell in 1992, he traveled to the Netherlands , where he stayed until 2009. There he was active in the Afghan community. During the 2009 presidential election he was a candidate in a field of 38 participants. He got 7339 votes.

According to a profile article by the Pajhwok Afghan News agency , he was the Afghan ambassador for the Soviet Union and non-resident ambassador for Finland, Romania and Cyprus from 1980 to 1986 .
