The port of Dover is a British seaport and is located on the Strait of Dover in the English city of Dover . It is one of the largest passenger ports in Europe. 14 million (2013: 12.7 million) travelers are handled here every year (compared to Piraeus , the largest, 20 million). Every year 700,000 (2013: 2.2 million) trucks , 2 million cars and motorcycles and 86,000 buses pass through the ferry port . In addition, there are goods worth 15.5 billion  pounds .

Infrastructure

The port of Dover is divided into the Eastern Docks and the Western Docks , which are about a kilometer apart. The Eastern Docks to the east of the port contain the main ferry terminal. There are nine ferry bridges with appropriate handling buildings for loading and unloading the ferries . The adjacent freight terminal can be used by one ship each up to 180 meters in length. Three loading cranes are available for loading and unloading.

The Western Docks to the west of the port are home to the Dover cruise terminal . This is located on the Admiralty Pier and consists of the converted hall of the former Dover Marine station , which was closed in 1994, and a new building. Two cruise ships can be processed at the same time.

To the east of the cruise terminal is the Hoverport , which was used to handle the SR.N4 hovercraft from 1968 until it was decommissioned in 2000 . Until the bankruptcy in 2005, Hoverspeed still used the terminal for handling catamaran high-speed ferries , from February 2007 to November 2008 the area was partially used by the catamaran ferry operator Speedferries (also in bankruptcy). Dover marina entrance is between the cruise terminal and Hoverport .

The port is accessible from Folkestone via the A20, an extension of the M20 from London, and from Canterbury via the A2, an extension of the M2 . There is a bus service from the port to Dover Priory Station , from where trains run to Charing Cross and Victoria stations in London and Ramsgate .

Ferry connections

The shipping companies P&O and MyFerryLink offer up to 53 daily connections to Calais and DFDS Seaways / Norfolkline up to twelve to Dunkerque . These shipping companies operate from the Eastern Docks .

The opening of the Eurotunnel in 1994 and the end of the hovercraft air-cushion connection to Calais in 2000 had a negative impact on the number of passengers, as a result of which the number of ferry connections was reduced several times.
