Haftel: hook and eye
Hooks and eyes from the Mühlberg ensemble in Kempten, 15./16. Century
Heftelmacher in "Das Ständebuch" (1568)

The or the Haftel or the Häftel or the Häftli (of MHG. Heftelîn, Haftel ), including the Representative, is a clasp of the garment to hold a cloak or other garment.

A distinction is made between the adhesive:

  • The agraffe (from French agrafe 'hook') - a hook that usually snaps into a small eye as a counterpart. It can also be found under names such as Hafthaken, Haftmännchen, Krampen, Krapen or Vater .
  • The fibula (from Latin fibula , clasp), which works on the principle of the safety pin .

Both forms were replaced by buttons and buttonholes from the 14th century , the fibula has only survived as a brooch , but the clasp was used as a stick up into the 20th century and can still be found in traditional costumes and on bras today.

The profession of Haftelmachers found early on as acicularius , Nadler, Hookmaker '(also Heftelmacher, adhesion maker, Häftlimacher u. Ä.). From him the proverbial watch out is derived like a sticky maker , which originally referred to the care when bending the small devices.

Agraffe or sticks (l) are also called hooks for hooking in the shoelaces instead of eyelets for pulling through lace-up shoes .
