The grove spade moss ( Scapania nemorea , syn .: Scapania nemorosa (L.) Dumort.) Is a liverwort - species of the order Lophoziales .

features

The strong, about 1 to 5 centimeters long and 3 to 4 millimeters wide plants form green to brown-red lawns. The leaves are bilobed, with larger, oval lower lobes and only 1/2 to 1/3 as large, rounded-rectangular upper lobes that overlap the stems. The lower lobe clearly runs down the trunk, but the upper lobe does not. Both leaf lobes are sawn on the edge.

The leaf cells are rounded to rounded, rectangular, tough-walled, about 20 to 25 µm in size and usually have clearly thickened cell corners. There are around 5 oil bodies in each of the cells, these are rounded-elliptical and made up of numerous oil droplets.

A characteristic feature of this species are the brood bodies , they sit in a few brownish piles at the tip of the shoots. The individual brood bodies are unicellular, oval and about 20 µm in size.

The plants are diocesan . Perianthia and sporogons are not often formed.

Distribution and locations

The grove spade moss is found in parts of the northern hemisphere. In Central Europe it is quite common from the plains to the middle mountain ranges and is common in places.

The species grows in shady, moderately fresh and lime-free locations and colonizes rock, earth and rotten wood.
