Haitham ibn Tariq

Haitham ibn Tariq ibn Taymur as-Sa'id ( Arabic هيثم بن طارق بن تيمور آل سعيد, DMG Haiṯam b. Ṭāriq b. Taimūr Āl Saʿīd ; * October 13, 1954 in Muscat ) has been the Sultan of Oman since January 11, 2020 . In this office he is the successor of his cousin Sultan Qaboos ibn Said . Previously, he was Minister of Culture in the Sultanate of Oman.

Life

Haitham ibn Tariq is a member of the Bū-Saʿīd dynasty , which has been the rulers of Oman since 1746. His father was Tariq bin Taimur , who served as Prime Minister under Sultan Qaboos in the 1970s. Tariq bin Taimur's brother was the former Sultan Said ibn Taimur . Haitham graduated from the University of Oxford's Foreign Service Program (FSP) in 1979 and completed his postgraduate studies at Pembroke College . He became head of the Oman Football Association in 1980 ; he is considered an avid sports fan. He was Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1986 to 1994 and was later appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1994–2002). From the mid-1990s he was Minister for Cultural Heritage. During this time he often represented the Sultanate abroad or received foreign guests. He is described as looking outwards and oriented to the west. On the other hand, the Ministry of Culture was considered poorly organized during his tenure as minister.

He is also Chairman of the Oman 2040 Vision for the Future Committee, Honorary President of the Oman Association for the Disabled, and Honorary President of the Omani-Japanese Friendship Association .

Haitham is married to Ahad bint Abdallah bin Hamad Al Saïd and has four children with her: Dhiyazan bin Haitham Al-Saïd, Balarab bin Haitham Al-Saïd, Thuraya bint Haitham Al-Saïd and Omaima bint Haitham Al-Saïd. His cousin and predecessor Qabus was briefly married to Haitham's sister Kamila bint Tariq Al Sa'id in the 1970s, making Qabus his brother-in-law for a time.

Sultan of Oman

Haitham's predecessor Sultan Qaboos had no children or siblings, so his possible successor was not immediately clear. It was known, however, that Qaboos had named an heir to the throne in a sealed letter. Therefore, over the years there has been speculation about possible successors, in which his half-brother Assad bin Tariq al Said was named. However, after Qaboos' death on January 10, 2020, Haitham ibn Tariq succeeded him as Sultan of Oman after taking an oath the following day in an emergency meeting of the Oman Council in al-Bustan. The Omani state television announced that Haitham was the new ruling sultan of the country. In the letter mentioned, Qabus had apparently designated him as his successor. His title as Sultan is " His Majesty The Sultan of Oman". As Sultan, he also holds the positions of Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Defense Minister, Finance Minister and Foreign Minister of the country.
