Hal Caswell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hal Caswell (born April 27, 1949 ) is an American theoretical biologist who mainly deals with ecological and demographic issues. He has been researching and teaching at the University of Amsterdam since 2013 , having previously spent over 30 years at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution .

Career

Caswell studied at Michigan State University , where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1971 , before obtaining a Ph.D. in 1974 in Zoology. received his doctorate . After graduation, he spent another year as a research fellow at MSU before moving to the University of Connecticut in 1975 , where he was an assistant professor until 1982 . He then returned to Massachusetts, where he worked as a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution , which is associated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Caswell has worked over 30 years in Woods Hole until in 2013 a professor at the University of Amsterdam followed, where he has been a professor of mathematical demography and ecology (Professor of Mathematical Demography and Ecology) teaches and researches.

Scientific work

Caswell deals with the interfaces between theoretical biology and ecology , so he develops models based on matrices to consider populations of animals, plants, but also the human population ( demography ). Another focus is on stochastic aspects of ecology, such as random fluctuations and individual heterogeneity in populations or populations.

Honors

Caswell was elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1985 and was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1989/90 . In 2000 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 2014 to the Ecological Society of America . In addition, Caswell has held an honorary professorship at the Syddansk Universitet since 2013 and was honored with the Mindel C. Sheps Award of the Population Association of America in 2014.
