Half Zantop

Half Zantop (born April 24, 1938 in Eckernförde ; † January 27, 2001 in Etna near Hanover (New Hampshire) ) was a German-American geologist and university professor. He specialized in economic geology (economic geology).

Life

Half Zantop was the son of the printer Alfred Zantop and his wife Margarete geb. Buchenau. His parents lived in Barcelona , where he also attended school. Zantop studied geology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , Washington State University and the Stanford University School of Earth Sciences . He received his PhD from Stanford in 1969.

1970 Marriage to the political scientist and Germanist Susanne Zantop b. Korsukéwitz. From 1969 to 1975 they lived in different countries in South America, Africa and Spain, where Half Zantop worked as a geologist for the mining company Kennecott Copper and the steel producer Bethlehem Steel . In 1975 Half Zantop came with his family to study at Heidelberg University for a year . In 1976 he came to Dartmouth College , where he became Associate Professor in 1982 and Full Professor of Earth Sciences in 1988 . Zantop was temporarily visiting professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

On January 27, 2001, the Zantop couple were attacked and murdered in their home in Etna by two young people with robbery intent. The case caused quite a stir. On the campus of Dartmouth College, the Zantop Garden in front of Richardson Hall has been a reminder of the two university teachers since 2009. Parts of the collection of his grandfather Siegfried Buchenau's collection are documented in the couple's estate .
