Lord Carlisle's Railway

Hallbankgate stands at the highest point of the ascent of the so-called "Lord Carlisle's Railway", the Brampton Railway , which connected Brampton Junction station with the mines and quarries around Hallbankgate. The Brampton Railway began as a wooden wagon route at Tindall Fell near Tindale . The main line was built in 1798 and commissioned in 1799. In 1808 the line was rebuilt and equipped with steel rails, the first commercial use of these rails. The gauge was changed to standard gauge. In 1836 a connection to the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway was made at Brampton Junction station. By 1852 the line was extended via Halton Lea Gate to Lambley and Lambley Junction. The ascent from Kirkhouse to Hallbankgate was so steep in one section that it had to be overcome with a gravity-pulled rope system. The route was used by rocket locomotives from 1836 to 1840 . There was an engine shed in Hallbankgate. There was passenger traffic, but the route was mainly used for the transportation of coal and stone. The line was closed in 1953.
