Halleh Ghorashi (also Ghoreishi ; born July 30, 1962 in Tehran , Iran ) is an Iranian-Dutch anthropologist . From 2005 to 2012 she had the PaVEM seat in the management for diversity and integration of the department for organizational sciences at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam . In 2008 she won the De Triomf integration award .

biography

Ghorashi grew up in Iran . In 1980, she received a high school diploma in social sciences and economics there . In 1988 she came to the Netherlands as a political refugee . She studied cultural anthropology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and received her Ph.D. in May 2001. at Radboud University Nijmegen . Her dissertation is called Ways to Survive, Battles to Win: Iranian Women Exiles in the Netherlands and the US In 2005 she was appointed professor. In 2006, Ghorashi became the first incumbent on the Seat for Management for Diversity and Inclusion, recommended by PaVEM, the Dutch committee for the participation of women and ethnic minorities. Its inauguration took place in the presence of Princess Máxima of the Netherlands , Chairwoman of PaVEM, and was widely reported in the Dutch media.

In 2008, Ghorashi co-organized a conference of the Muslim diaspora. In 2009 she was the speaker at a protest in front of the Binnenhof (the Dutch parliament building).

Halleh Ghorashi is an advocate of a more inclusive political mindset, contrary to the political climate of the Netherlands at the beginning of the 21st century with its strong populists and its anti-Islamic discourse. Ghorashi argues that if immigrants are demonized and excluded from the political debate, integration into Dutch society cannot be expected.

In 2010, the Dutch feminist magazine Opzij listed her as one of the most powerful women in the Netherlands. In 2020 she was elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences .
