The Cape Hallett is a massive and towering Cape at the Borchgrevink Coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . Halfway between Cape Adare and Coulman Island , it forms the northern end of the Hallett Peninsula at the foot of Mount Geoffrey Markham and around 16 km south of Cape Christie .

The British polar explorer James Clark Ross discovered the cape in 1841 during his Antarctic expedition (1839–1843). Ross named it after Thomas Rawe Hallett († 1845), officer on board the HMS Erebus on this research trip .

The Cape is an Antarctic oasis and was the location of a shared scientific base between the United States and New Zealand during the International Geophysical Year 1957 , which was permanently manned until 1964 when a severe fire broke out. It was still used as a summer base until 1973. The site is currently being redeveloped by removing hazardous materials, as well as fuels and oils stored in large tanks . This project will take several years to complete. To protect the large colony of Adelie penguins and the exceptionally species-rich Antarctic vegetation Cape Hallett is as Antarctic Specially Protected Area no. 106 ( Antarctic Specially Protected Area No 106 ) are reported and may not be entered without permission.

In 1956, the US ship USS Arneb was damaged by an ice floe here during Operation Deep Freeze II .
