Theodor Haltorth

Theodor Haltorth (born May 18, 1910 in Kassel -Bettenhausen; † January 30, 1981 ) was a German zoologist .

Life

Theodor Haltorth was born in Kassel-Bettenhausen as the second son of the factory owner Paul Haltorth and his wife Johanna Haltorth (née Gravenhorst). In 1953, in his function as senior curator and head of the mammal department of the zoological collection of the Bavarian State in Munich, he founded the journal mammal-related messages of the working group for mammal research. Haltorth's main focus was primarily on wildcat research. In 1953 he wrote the first scientific description of the Cretan wildcat ( Felis silvestris cretensis ). In 1971 he encouraged Reinhold Rau to join the Quagga project, a program to breed back quaggas in the Cape Province.

Haltorth also became known as the author and co-author of several popular science books on animals. For example, it was 1969 at the Encyclopedia Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia of Bernhard Grzimek involved (1909-1987) and wrote the chapter on the family of deer (Cervidae). Furthermore, he was co-author of the zoological texts for Eugen Schuhmacher's works The Last Paradises (1966) and Europe's Paradises (1972).
