The Haltwhistle Burn is a river east of Haltwhistle in Northumbria , England .
The river arises in an area north of Hadrian's Wall , which consists of the typical Northumbrian strata of limestone , sandstone , slate and coal and is crossed by numerous small watercourses, most of which are unnamed. The Caw Burn and the Pont Gallon Burn are the two longer clearly identifiable source rivers of the Haltwhistle Burn.
Haltwhistle Burn is surrounded by numerous Roman camps south of Hadrian's Wall. In this area it has also buried itself in the rock layers, making it easier to access them. For example, lime was burnt on the Burn, and coal and the coal-iron stone that occurs with it was mined and processed.
The Haltwhistle Burn joins the South Tyne south of Haltwhistle .
