The Hamburger Singakademie is an association of amateur singers.

history

It was created in 1819 as The Society of Friends of Religious Singing . It has been called the Hamburger Singakademie since 1844 . Members include members of the Mönckeberg, von Gossler , Schmilinsky , Lutteroth and Sieveking families in Hamburg . Friedrich Wilhelm Grund , the founder of the Philharmonic Society , which he directed for 44 years, played a decisive role in the Singakademie's initial success . One of his successors, Julius von Bernuth , the 27-year conducted the Singakademie, 1869 brought the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms with the Philharmonic Society and the Hamburg Singing Academy in St. Michael's Church performed. From 1903, with the exception of 1940 and 1946, the choir performed the Requiem regularly until 1994 on the day of penance and prayer.

From 1872 there was a close connection with the Philharmonic State Orchestra. The choir conductors were mostly the choir directors of the State Opera such as Max Thurn , Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg , Adolf Bautze , Günther Schmidt-Bohländer and Jürgen Schulz . From 1990 to 1999 Theo Wiedebusch , the choir director of the Bremen Opera, directed the Hamburger Singakademie.

The Hamburger Singakademie was founded by conductors Eugen Jochum , Joseph Keilberth , Paul Hindemith , Rudolf von Oertzen (1910–1990), Leopold Ludwig , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Horst Stein , Aldo Ceccato , Hans Zender , Giuseppe Sinopoli , Hanns-Martin Schneidt , Christoph Eschenbach , Gerd Albrecht , Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Ingo Metzmacher .

In 1990 the firm relationship with the Philharmonic State Orchestra was broken. The Hamburger Singakademie is now also working with other orchestras and has expanded its repertoire to include a cappella choral works.

Since the end of 2000, the Hamburger Singakademie has mainly performed works that are not part of the standard repertoire. This was made possible by the choir director Cornelius Trantow (University of Music and Theater Hamburg), who advocated unusual choral literature and carried out intensive voice training with the choir.

Jörg Mall has continued the work of Cornelius Trantow since July 2011 . Currently (2014) around 50 active singers (S / A / T / B) sing in the Hamburger Singakademie.
