Game description

Hamburgum is a complex strategy game with a historical background. The game board shows the city of Hamburg in the 18th century, alternatively you can also use the back of the game board with a city map of London and an English description of the game; all playing cards and short game rules are also in two languages.

The aim of the game is to gain prestige through “church donations”. The game is not rolled , but for each player there is an action piece in his game color on the action wheel, which he can move one, two or three spaces clockwise on each turn. If you want to move more than three spaces on the action round, each additional space costs one prestige point deduction.

Course of the game

Before the game, each player receives one item of basic equipment (cloth, beer and sugar) and one building material each (wood and brick); in addition, depending on the starting place, money in different amounts and first prestige points.

The place on the play rondel determines the action permitted in each case, there are eight play areas:

  • Office (available twice in the roundabout)
Here you can either sell goods or buy building materials - but only one of the two at a time. The selling price depends on the number of building cards in the game (brewer for beer, draper for cloth, sugar boiler for sugar) and tends to decrease over the course of the game. The purchase price of the building materials depends on their number: the more building materials you want to buy at the same time, the more expensive it becomes.
  • Goods ( beer , cloth , sugar )
If you go to one of these spaces, you get the corresponding goods. If you have one or more associated building cards, you get an additional goods stone for each of these cards.
  • shipyard
Standing on this space, you can build ships, for which wood is required.
  • church
Here you can donate to one of the six churches.
  • town hall
If you move to this space, you can erect buildings, for this you need the building material brick and wood once.

Churches

Building materials, money and finally church bells are donated for the church. The first donation has to be made for a small amount of money, with every further donation it becomes more expensive. After the donation, the player receives a donation tile from the respective church, which he can have scored immediately or can be kept for the time being in the hope that it will lead to a better score in a later game situation.

As soon as five donations have been received for one of the six churches, this church is finished and the builder receives bonus points. The game ends when all six churches are completed.

building

With the church donation, the player places one of his playing discs on the field of the respective church on the game board. With this he also acquires building rights for various buildings in the vicinity of "his" church. The first building must be directly adjacent to the Kirchenfeld, further buildings can then be erected adjacent to existing buildings. After the completion of the first church, the player can build on any fields.

Buildings bring various advantages. B. the production of the goods or bring the player an amount of money immediately. For example, if you own a brewery, you get two units of beer in the “beer” field of the roundabout, and if you own two cloth shops you get three units of cloth when you visit the “cloth” field. The production of goods serves to bring money into circulation, which can then be used to buy building materials. The basic strategy of the game is to maintain this cycle.

port

Having your own ship in the port is the basis for being able to sell goods. If the harbor basin is filled by the construction of new ships, the existing ships move further down the Elbe, which means that fewer and fewer goods can be exchanged with them. It is therefore important for every player to take part in the construction of new ships so as not to be unable to act at all in the end.
