Hamid Idris Awate
Hamid Idris Awate (* 1910 in Gerset between Tesseney and Omhajer in the southwest of the Italian colony of Eritrea ; † May 28, 1962 ) was a leader in the early movements for the independence of the province of Eritrea from the Abyssinian Empire .
He has the status of a national role model.
Life
His father was a farmer. In 1935 he came to the conscription of Italian soldiers , who served in the colonial army of Eritrean Askaris . He learned the Italian language in a short time and was sent to Rome for a course in military intelligence .
After returning from the Kingdom of Italy , he was appointed security officer in western Eritrea during World War II . Shortly afterwards he was deputy head of the city of Kassala in the Egyptian Sudan and the surrounding area, during the brief Italian occupation of this city in 1940/1941. He fought as Askari in the Battle of Keren and participated in the Italian partisans in Eritrea against the Ethiopians in World War II with the riders of Ali Gabre .
He founded the Eritrean Liberation Army and the Eritrean Liberation Front .
He was wounded in the battle against the occupation forces and succumbed to the injuries, although some claim that he died of natural causes.
Act
Awate is a role model for many Eritreans. In addition to his language skills in Arabic , Tigre , Tigrinya , Nara , Hedareb and Kunama , Awate also spoke fluent Italian.
The government of Eritrea erected a statue in his honor on his grave on September 1, 1994.
