Hammond Innes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hammond Innes (actually: Ralph Hammond Innes ; born July 15, 1913 in Horsham , † June 10, 1998 in Kersey ) was a British novelist. He was inspired by world trips to adventure stories that often take place in inhospitable nature.

life and work

At the age of 17 he wrote his first novel The Doppelganger (published 1937). From 1934 to 1940 he wrote for the Financial News newspaper . He was an artilleryman until 1946. In 1978 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire . He wrote until shortly before his death. His last novel was Delta Connection (1996). Some of his novels were made into films, such as The Shipwreck of the Mary Deare in 1959 .

For a book, he usually spent six months traveling and researching, followed by six months producing the manuscript. Many of his works deal with events at sea. The geology is often a central element (mineral resources, volcanism). Unusually for the thriller genre, Innes' protagonists are often not "heroes" in the traditional sense, but ordinary people who suddenly find themselves in extreme situations. The protagonist is usually forced to rely on his own mind and make the best possible use of the limited resources.
