The castle is located on a mountain top at 1665 meters above the village of Knarawan .

history

Handaberd Castle is historically important and was therefore mentioned in several Armenian chronicles. According to the Armenian chronicler of the Middle Ages Movses Kaghankatvazi, Handaberd Castle was built by Atrnerseh Smbatian in the second half of the 9th century. The first castle complex was initially very small and was located in a place that shows traces of an older complex from the 5th century. The castle complex was massively expanded at a later date. The castle also had a system of watchtowers. Of these, a watchtower on the 2018 meter high mountain Pahak, 2.4 kilometers from the castle, has been preserved. According to the inscription on a Khachkar from the Dadivank Monastery , the castle belonged to the Prince of Khachhen in the 12th century .
