Handarpe is a farming community with the settlements of Hollenbergs Hügel and Ortfeld in the municipality of Westerkappeln in the Westphalian Tecklenburger Land .

The peasantry Handarpe is, together with the peasantry Seeste , Osterbeck , Westerbeck, Metten, Düte, Sennlich , Hambüren and Lada, part of the municipality Westerkappeln . Located in the eastern Tecklenburger Land ( Steinfurt district ), Handarpe is a total of 20 km from Osnabrück in Lower Saxony via the former federal highway 65 . Handarpe is 5.4 km west and 1.9 km south of the center of Westerkappeln, which means a total distance of 5.75 km, and borders on the farming communities of Metten, Düte, Sennlich and Hambüren. The core of Handarpe are the settlements of Hollenbergs Hügel and Ortfeld.

Hollenbergs Hügel settlement

The settlement was built by the district building cooperative of the Tecklenburg district on a hillside. In the post-war period, there was a lack of urgently needed housing for over 10,000 displaced persons in the entire Tecklenburg district . This resulted primarily in apartments for miners and their families. This included the Hollenbergs Hügel settlement built from 1954 onwards . In June 1959, the Catholic St. Barbara Church was consecrated at the settlement, which gave way to the expansion of the kindergarten in 2012.

Ortfeld settlement

The foundation stone for the construction of the Handarper Church took place as early as 1964. The church was located below the settlement of Hollenbergs Hügel directly on the former federal highway 65. The first houses in the new Ortfeld settlement were built at the church from the 1970s . Larger construction activities began with the designation of new building areas in the early 1990s.

The center of Handarpe is the Protestant church, which stands in the middle of the Ortfeld settlement. In 1912 there were first discussions about a church in the south of Westerkappeln . After the two world wars, the talks were resumed in 1961. Since one could not agree on a location, a church was built in both Hambüren and Handarpe, which was mainly financed by donations from the citizens. The church was commissioned on November 28, 1965 and has been maintained by the local friends' association since 2007 after talks about the demolition of the church.

Leisure and schools

In Handarpe there is a primary school in which around 115 pupils from Handarpe and the surrounding farmers are taught. The sports club SC VelpeSüd 1952 eV is located in the sports hall of the elementary school and has, among other things, a football and table tennis department.
