Hannes B. Staehelin

Hannes Benedikt Staehelin (born July 22, 1937 in Basel ) is a Swiss geriatrician .

Staehelin completed his medical studies at the University of Basel in 1964 . From 1966 to 1969 he worked as a postdoctoral student in the CNS Research Laboratory of Hoffmann-La Roche , then in the Surgical Research Laboratory of the Loma Linda Medical School in California. In 1977 he replaced Paul Benedikt Jucker-Staehelin as head of the geriatric clinic at Basel University Hospital .

Staehelin was President of the Novartis Foundation for Gerontology and together with J.-P. Michel, John Grimley Evans, B. Steen and S. Duursma Founders of the European Academy for Medicine of Aging (EAMA). For many years he was president of the Federal Nutrition Commission and chairman of the founding committee of the German Institute for Nutrition Research (DIfE) in Potsdam. For this activity he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
