Hannes Weninger (soccer player)

Hannes Weninger (born January 12, 1958 in Wiener Neustadt ; † July 13, 2005 in Graz ) was an Austrian football player , coach and most recently sports manager of the GAK .

Life

Weninger began his playing career in 1976 as a goalkeeper at FK Austria Wien , where he was four times Austrian champion until he left in 1981 . Then he moved to SC Eisenstadt and celebrated promotion to the 1st Bundesliga with the Burgenlanders. After an interlude at VfB Mödling , he played for Kremser SC in 1987/88 and sensationally won the Austrian Cup with the second division team .

In 1989 Weninger had to end his active career after several knee injuries and returned to VfB Mödling as a coach. In the following years he looked after the teams ASK Kottingbrunn (5 championship titles and march through to the second division), SC Untersiebenbrunn and VfB Admira Wacker Mödling. From July 1, 2003 Weninger worked as a sports manager at the GAK, where he celebrated his last major success with the club's first championship title.

As early as 2003, Weninger had a tumor removed from his large intestine, and since then he has struggled with serious health problems, but remained manager of the GAK until his death. Hannes Weninger died on July 13, 2005 of serious cancer .
