Hans-Günter Gierloff-Emden

Hans-Günter Gierloff-Emden (born May 22, 1923 in Wilhelmshaven ; † July 1, 2011 in Hamburg ) was a German geographer .

Life

From 1965 he was full professor for geography, geographic remote sensing and oceanography at the University of Munich and retired in 1991.

Second World War
Gierloff- Emden was the son of an Imperial Deck Officer and entered the Navy on January 1, 1941 as an officer candidate. From April 12th to September 30th he was on the Scharnhorst and took part in the Südwind company . He then received further training as a submarine driver. From January 31, 1942 to August 1, 1942 he was on the U-88 under Heino Bohmann . From May 12, 1943 he served as a first lieutenant on the U-978 under Uwe Pulst. With the submarine he undertook a 71-day snorkeling trip in the English Channel from October to December 1941.
