Until 1963, Hans-Jürgen Albrecht played as a junior player at Motor Altenburg . From 1962 to 1963 he was a member of the GDR junior national team , for which he played two international matches. For the 1963/64 season he was delegated to the football focus of the region, the GDR upper division club SC Leipzig. Coach Rudolf Krause used him for the first time on matchday 4 as a half right striker in the league. After another use on the 7th matchday, Albrecht was no longer called up in the league team. In May 1965 he was called up for military service and during this time he was able to play football for the Vorwärts Rostock Army Sports Association . By October 1966 Albrecht made 37 appearances for the ASG in the second-rate GDR league , scoring eight goals.

After the end of his army service, Albrecht joined the Oberliga climber Wismut Gera. There he was used in November 1966 and came to eleven league games and two goals by the end of the 1966/67 season. He was always used as a striker. Since Gera did not manage to stay in the league, Albrecht played with the motor team again in the GDR league in 1967/68. Of the 30 point games he completed only 19 games, but came to six goals.

In the summer of 1968 Albrecht moved to the upper division FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. There he played three seasons in the GDR top league until 1971. He was always a regular for Erfurt and was called up 68 times in the 78 point games from 1968 to 1971. He continued to play in attack and scored 21 goals. In 1971, FC Rot-Weiß was relegated to the GDR league, where Albrecht was used in 18 of 22 point games in the 1971/72 season and contributed six goals to the immediate resurgence. In the 1973/74 season, Albrecht was no longer part of the league squad. Until 1975 he played ten point games without scoring for the GDR league team Rot-Weiß Erfurt II.

From 1975 to 1980 Albrecht played for the third-rate regional league club Motor Geithain, where he was the top scorer in the Leipzig regional league in 1975 with 23 goals. He then ended his career as a football player.
