Athletic career

Hans-Jürgen Pohl played the first games in the second-rate GDR league in the 1971/72 season for the SG Dynamo police sports club in Schwerin . In the 22 league games played, he completed six games and scored his first goal in higher-class league operations. In the seasons from 1972/73 to 1974/75 Pohl played football as a soldier in the National People's Army . At first he had a regular seat at the army sports association ASG Vorwärts in Meiningen , which also played in the GDR league. In the 44 league games of the 1972/73 and 1973/74 seasons he was called up in 38 matches and was the team's top scorer with eight and eleven goals respectively. For the 1974/75 season the ASG Vorwärts was relocated from Meiningen to Plauen , but took over the previous league position. For ASG Vorwärts Plauen , Pohl only played six league games, in which he once again distinguished himself as a top scorer with four goals.

After his discharge from the People's Army, Pohl returned to Dynamo Schwerin. The Schwerin had completed the season 1974/75 as the first in their GDR league relay and thus qualified for the promotion games to the GDR Oberliga . Dynamo Schwerin only finished 4th among the five aspirants for promotion and thus missed promotion. Pohl returned to Schwerin in time to take part in the promotion round. He was used six times in the eight games and scored a goal. Until 1984 Pohl was one of the most valuable players in SG Dynamo. In the nine seasons with a total of 198 league games, he played 177 games and was the Schwerin’s top scorer with the exception of the 1982/83 season (3 goals). In 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1984 he was also the top scorer in the league season A.

Hans-Jürgen Pohl completed his last season in higher-class football at the age of 31 in 1983/84. In the GDR league, which was reduced to two seasons, he was used in 34 league games in 15 games and scored his last three GDR league goals. After completing his career as a competitive footballer, he was able to look back on 242 games in the GDR league with 157 goals and on 10 league promotion games with two goals within 14 seasons.
