Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann (born May 10, 1934 in Berlin ) is a German engineer and economist. From 1988 to 1991 he was dean of the Faculty of Economics at RWTH Aachen University . Until 1999 he held the chair for corporate research ( Operations Research) at RWTH Aachen. He is currently Scientific Director of ELITE (European Laboratory for Intelligent Techniques Engineering) and Scientific Advisory Board of INFORM GmbH. For his scientific work in the field of Operations Research and Fuzzy Set Theory, he has received several national and international awards, including the Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award 2011.

H.-J. Zimmermann received his intermediate diploma at the Technical University of Darmstadt , the titles "Diplom-Ingenieur" and "Dr. rer. Pol." in mathematical economics and business administration at the Technical University of Berlin .

Scientific career

Since 1972, H.-J. Zimmermann is active in the field of fuzzy set theory and its applications. His research interests included fuzzy mathematical programming, fuzzy control , fuzzy expert systems, fuzzy data analysis and their application in various areas, such as: B. Strategic planning, decision-making in management, simultaneous engineering and other areas.

After H.-J. Zimmermann held various positions in industry, he became a professor at the University of Illinois and taught at various universities in India, Europe and the USA. He received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels and the second honorary doctorate from the Abo Academy University of Finland. In 1985 he received the EURO Gold Medal, the highest award in the field of Operations Research in Europe, the KS Fu Certificate of Recognition, the highest award from the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society and in 1993 the Moisil Prize and the Gold Medal. In 1997 he received the Kaufmann Prize, a gold medal for excellent achievements in uncertainty research in management and in 1999 the "European Pioneers Award" for "Pioneering Research" from the European "Fuzzy Systems Association", the "Special Certificate of Merit" from IFSA first made an honorary member of the German Operations Research Society and a Fellow of IFSA.

Zimmermann was president of the "German Society for Operations Research" (1971–1975), the "European Associations of Operational Research Societies" (1975–1978), the "International Fuzzy Systems Association" (IFSA) (1984–1987), the " Association of German Industrial Engineers "(VWI) (1987–1989) and the" European Engineering and Management Associations "(EEMA) (1991–1993). He was also Vice President of the "International Federation of Operational Research Societies" (IFORS) (1980–1983) and several other professional associations. Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann was the organizer and chairman of numerous national and international conferences.

H.-J. Zimmermann has published more than 240 articles in the fields of operations research, decision theory and fuzzy set theory, as well as 30 books in German and English in similar areas. From 1978 to 1999 he was the editor of the specialist journal "International Journal for Fuzzy Sets and Systems" and the "European Journal of Operational Research". He is the editor of the "International Series in Intelligent Technologies" book series and other specialist journals.
