Hans-Joachim Spangenberg (born May 5, 1932 in Jena ; † April 30, 2017 ) was a German chemist ( physical chemistry ).

Spangenberg studied physics and physical chemistry at the University of Jena from 1952 with a diploma in 1957 and a doctorate in 1960. From 1964 he was at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and completed his habilitation in 1968 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1973 he became professor of physical chemistry and in 1974 deputy director of the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry and head of the high-temperature chemistry department.

He dealt with thermodynamics, spectroscopy and plasma chemistry (diagnostics at high temperatures, plasma pyrolysis of hydrocarbons in a plasma jet).

In October 1981 he received the National Prize of the GDR 2nd class for science and technology in the research collective of the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR for his part in researching the physico-chemical basis of the conversion of hydrocarbons in thermal plasma .

Spangenberg died shortly before his 85th birthday.
