from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Joachim Werner (born April 16, 1950 in Hamburg ) is a German chemist ( theoretical chemistry , quantum chemistry ) and was head of the Institute for Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart from 1994 to 2018 .

Life

Werner studied chemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (diploma in 1975 with Wilfried Meyer ) and received his doctorate in 1977 at the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen with Albert Weller . In 1982 he completed his habilitation at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he had been since 1977. In 1982/83 he was at the University of Kaiserslautern , 1983/84 visiting scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and 1984/85 Churchill Fellow of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie at Churchill College , Cambridge. From 1985 to 1987 he was a Heisenberg fellow of the German Research Foundation . In 1987 he became professor of theoretical chemistry at Bielefeld University (1992/93 Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry) and in 1994 at Stuttgart University . There he was Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry from 2006 to 2012 and Vice-Rector for Research and Young Scientists from 2012 to 2015.

In 1990 he was visiting professor at the University of Bologna and in 2003 and 2005 at the University of Marne-La-Vallée .

He deals with methods of quantum chemistry and, together with Peter Knowles (University of Cardiff), developed the popular MOLPRO program package for ab initio calculations in quantum chemistry. The origins were already in joint work with his teacher in Mainz, Wilfried Meyer. Werner conducts research on local treatment of electron correlation, explicit correlation methods, coupled cluster methods, multi-reference methods, intermolecular interactions and elementary reactions.

In 1999 he received the Jost Medal of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and in 1996 the Max Planck Research Prize for International Cooperation. In 2000 he received the Leibniz Prize , in 2007 the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize and in 2018 the Erich Hückel Prize . He was on the board of the theoretical chemistry working group for over ten years and was a member of the standing committee of the Bunsen Society . He is a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and has been a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen since 2002 . In 2012 he received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council .

From 2001 to 2003 he was chairman of the computer system commission of the German Research Foundation. From 2008 to 2013 he was editor of Molecular Physics and from 1995 to 2012 he was on the editorial board of the Zeitschrift für Physikalische Chemie and he is on the editorial board of Theoretical Chemistry Accounts (since 1997) and International Reviews in Physical Chemistry (since 1995).
