Student pastor Hans-Joachim Vogel, around 1973

Hans-Jochen Vogel (born February 27, 1943 in Chemnitz ; † December 27, 2005 there ) was a student pastor .

Life

Vogel was pastor of the Protestant student community in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) for 25 years. After the self-immolation of the Falkensteiner pastor Rolf Günther on September 17, 1978, the Karl-Marx-Stadt district administration of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) intensified its efforts to establish confidential contacts with "progressive" pastors in the church. As part of this action plan, Vogel was to be won over as an unofficial employee . Vogel also met with officers from the Ministry for several years. But after he did not meet the expectations placed in him, the cooperation was discontinued. The MfS later investigated Vogel because he actively supported peace groups in the GDR.

Vogel was involved in the peace work of his community, but he also worked in the Christian Peace Conference of the GDR (CFK). For the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Open Church” he published information sheets that were not approved by the state and rated as “anti-socialist” by the MfS.

After reunification he continued his engagement in peace politics and became a member of Attac Chemnitz. In 2000 he was charged with calling on the soldiers of the Bundeswehr to refuse to participate in the Kosovo war , but acquitted. Vogel took part in Easter marches in Chemnitz and gave speeches there. In 2005 he was co-initiator of the Chemnitz Peace Day.

Hans-Jochen Vogel was a long-time author of the magazine telegraph and editor of the newspaper against the war.

In 2004 Vogel was awarded the Chemnitz Peace Prize.
