Hans-Lothar Thiel

Hans-Lothar Thiel (born November 15, 1920 in Praust , Free City of Danzig , † March 29, 2002 ) was a German ophthalmologist .

Life

Hans-Lothar Thiel was born as the son of the Mayor of Roessel , Leopold Thiel. From 1926 to 1930 he completed elementary school in Rößel and until 1939 the humanistic high schools in Rößel, Marienburg and Allenstein . Hans-Lothar Thiel studied medicine at the universities of Breslau (WS 1939/40), Königsberg (SS 1940 – WS 1941/42, WS 1942/43) and Erlangen (SS 1944). On August 14, 1945 he passed the state examination in Erlangen and was approved. From September 1, 1945 he worked as a medical intern and from November 1, 1946 as a volunteer assistant at the local eye clinic. On February 20, 1947, he received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen. From February 1 of the following year he was a research assistant . Habilitated in ophthalmology on November 18, 1954, he worked as a private lecturer at the University of Erlangen from January 26, 1955 . On September 1, 1957, he became chief physician and director of the municipal eye clinic in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . In 1962 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . Hans-Lothar Thiel was a professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1984 he retired; His successor as clinic director was Holger Busse .

Thiel has made numerous scientific publications. The focus of teaching and research was on chemical burns of the visual organ and the surgical treatment of eye diseases.

In 1964 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Eugène Tisserant and invested in Cologne Cathedral on December 5, 1964 by Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger , Grand Prior of the Order.

Hans-Lothar Thiel was married twice and had six children. He died as a result of an accident.
